Porfirio Betegon is a proud Panamanian from Colón who moved to New York in 1986 and, after a distinguished tenure as an Emergency Services Unit Case Manager with HPD, now serves full time as a Boxing Supervisor and owner of Desde Aquí Para Allá. Educated in Business Administration with a law certificate—and later psychology from the College of New Rochelle—Porfirio has spent decades advancing boxing as a science of discipline and strategy. He has trained, promoted, and managed fighters, including world champions Guillermo Jones, Julio Green, and Agapito Sánchez; supervised WBO/NABO regional title bouts; and worked as a blow‑by‑blow sports interpreter for ESPN, Univision, and Showtime. A former member of the International Boxing Federation, he organized Panama’s 26th IBF convention, welcoming delegates from 30 countries, and he serves on the NABO board. Beyond the ring, Porfirio is a community builder who volunteers with Miracle Makers and Gleason’s Gym, guiding youth toward fitness, respect, and opportunity.Through Desde Aquí Para Allá, Porfirio channels his lifelong commitment to culture and service into a dynamic platform that preserves Afro‑Latin American and Latinx traditions—especially Panama’s—by producing interviews and live events, recognizing everyday changemakers, and sharing history, culture, and lived experience. The company’s mission mirrors his own: to empower the Afro‑Latinx community in the United States and across the world, celebrate heritage, and open pathways for new champions—both in boxing and in life.
